Sisters, international
Sacramento News & Review
Deer Park Avenue powers through pop that makes you wanna dance…
Sarah and Stephanie Snyder of local power-pop band Deer Park Avenue have been heavily influenced by all corners of the world. Their father is a church-planting pastor from Southern California; their mother is from Southern India; and they have lived in New York, Germany, France and Switzerland, and now, Sacramento.

Fast-forward to today, and the sisters have played their many songs—an engaging brand of power-pop and rock—on multiple continents. At one point, they worked as a cover band playing gigs in Switzerland. More recently, they have played venues such as Hollywood’s Whisky a Go Go and the Hard Rock Cafe in San Francisco. They have also played at Cal Expo, Luigi’s Fun Garden in Midtown and have appeared on Good Day Sacramento. >>>Read the full review.

Single of the Day: Self-Importance that Blows
Single of the Day
There’s a strong collegiate vibe going on in the recording. It’s not super polished, but there’s a good vibe there… I do like the vocals. They’re the standout point in this song.

The build into the chorus really a good way to push into it. I’d love to hear those punches really punching me hard. The elements are there and it will be interesting to see where they go when they get to polish themselves up a bit more from a production standpoint. The great thing is, the song is there. I’d be interested in knowing what they’re like live. >>>Read the full review.

Album Review: Stop & Go
Lemonade Magazine
Sisters Sarah (lead vox, guitar) and Stephanie Snyder (drums) make up two-thirds of Sacramento’s power pop trio Deer Park Avenue, and their latest EP is a raw and engaging ball of energy. It’s one of those records that almost feels like it was recorded at a live show because it is a bit unpolished, gritty and full of emotion and earnest deliveries.

+ Click for More

Devoting a lot of it’s time to relationships, love and being strong enough to be the person you need to be, it is encouraging and pretty fun to rock out to.

The driving rhythms of Hey Maria make it perfect dance party material, and the fuzzy guitars and raucous drums on Over Again are enough to make you bob your head and jump around, especially during the choruses. Millionaire gets a bit crunchy with the rock and features a sweet guest appearance by famed session drummer Gregg Bissonette, and on Darkness Hides Me the songs boiling undercurrents of anger and frustration are mirrored by the frenetic drums and moody guitars, and Sarah gives her most impassioned vocal performance here as well.

Stop and Go is a lively album you can enjoy no matter what kind of mood you’re in. Sarah gives steady vocal performances throughout and rarely moves out of her mid-range vocal comfort zone, and Stephanie does an admirable job bringing the beats. This album rocks.

Music Review: Deer Park Avenue – Stop & Go
Blog Critics
As someone who has been fortunate enough to hear a lot of well crafted music, it especially pleases me to review outstanding music produced by female musicians.

+ Click for More

I say that because many female musicians are working in a genre of music (rock) that remains dominated by males. Regardless of gender, what grabs my attention? Multiple singers, self-penned material, and strong hooks in the chorus or the bridge.

Deer Park Avenue, a power pop/rock band based out of Sacramento, California, certainly fits the bill with their latest CD, Stop and Go. It is a bewitching collection of eight wise-beyond-their-years rock and roll songs. >>>Read the full review.

They’ve traveled to dozens of places in the U.S. and Europe, graduated from journalism school in London, played a show at the Whisky a Go Go and they’re barely in their mid-20s. To say they’re constantly on the move would be an understatement.

“For the past year we’ve been all over the place — from Sacramento to San Francisco,” said Sarah Snyder in a recent phone interview from Sacramento.

It was a speakerphone interview and her sister Stephanie was also on the line. The two are the driving force behind Deer Park Avenue, a power-pop group based in Sacramento. The band’s newest album, “Stop & Go,” was released in 2011. >>>Read the full interview.

BGM: You’ve traveled everywhere from Switzerland and New York to Germany and California, all with an Indian mother. What kind of music did you grow up with?

DPA: Music was always playing in our home, from Bach, Beethoven, Albinoni, to soundtracks by our favorite composer John Barry. Both our parents were fans of rock and pop, so we heard a lot of classic rock like the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Doors, and the Eagles, to Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen.

We also listened to the music they brought over from when they lived in Europe — German, French, and Italian pop music. And of course from our mum’s side, we had a lot of Bollywood influences from movies she had grown up with like Yaadon Ki Baaraat and Bobby, and other Indian artists like Ravi and Ananda Shankar.>>>Read the full interview.

Deer Park Avenue – ‘Stop & Go’ (Self Released)
Über Röck
I have a confession to make. When I was given Deer Park Avenue’s latest offering ‘Stop & Go’ to review I immediately didn’t think I would warm to it purely because, I struggle with female vocalists. It’s not a sexist thing; I love great frontmen such as Spike or Michael Monroe. So, it is with great pleasure that I can announce that I am perhaps somewhat misguided, as this latest release from these California-based sisters proves that women can offer just as much as their male counterparts.

‘Waiting For You’…actually makes me ponder how the Gaslight Anthem would have sounded if Brian Fallon had been born female? The chorus to this nugget is infectious, the guitars upbeat making it a near perfect pop-rock song.

Track 5 ‘Say Goodbye’ for me though is the standout track on this album by far. It begins with a Beatles ‘Let It Be’ style piano and is quite simply a kick-ass ballad. This song will certainly no doubt soon be intruding my ‘Top 25 Most Played’ playlist on my iPod. ‘Say Goodbye’ sets the guidelines for how modern ballads should be done. The Snyder girls should be congratulated for being able to write songs as diverse as this and some of the rockier tunes that appear on this CD. After all, who wants to hear the same song rehashed over an entire album? In fact if this is what you require from your music listening, I can certainly recommend any of the post-2000 Bon Jovi albums, as they may be more to your fancy. >>>Read the full review.

Music Review: Deer Park Avenue – Stop & Go
Rock NYC
ADeer Park Avenue may be the name of a familiar road frequented by New Yorker teenagers, but it is also a young Los Angeles band fronted by two sisters Sarah and Stephanie Snyder respectively on guitar and drums, and Matt Bissonette on bass.

So how these two girls ended up playing in this prestigious place? For a very young band (they must have started just a few years ago) they have already built a following on line and there was a good crowd watching their dynamic performance on Monday night. Their power-pop-rock songs, fueled by Sarah’s guitar and her electric presence, were producing a totally radio-friendly melodic rock with a light dash of punk attitude (may be like a Green Day female touch), immediately engaging people in foot-tapping or hand-clapping. There were some catchy-as-soon-you-hear-them tunes, like‘Over Again’, which opened their set, announcing right away their fun, happy and energetic tone. >>>Read the full show review.

This single is off their latest release entitled Stop & Go which was produced by Matt Bissonette (Brian Wilson, Rick Springfield, Ringo Starr). The girls have a retro rock/pop sound that has been described as “Girl Weezer” or “Paramore covering the Beach Boys.” They have been compared to Green Day, Metric, and Jimmy Eat World. Their sound is an eclectic, alternative rock that reminds me of the greatness of the early nineties. It is simplistic, high energy, and melodic. This duo has an older influence with a great new rock edge that makes for some awesome music. >>>Read the full review.

Sarah and Stephanie Snyder are in a local band that takes on the world every day through travel and music. Deer Park Avenue has been described by many as being on all sides of the rock spectrum, from power pop to alternative to punk. One consistent word of description for this duo is “melodic.”

Starting with piano at the age of three, the Snyder sisters grew up playing music on various instruments. Deer Park Avenue itself only began two years ago, when their friend Gregg Bissonette suggested they record a few songs with his brother, Matt Bissonette. A Look at the Local Band Deer Park Avenue

I’ve debated with friends whether or not girls can play legitimate rock music, and really rock. Not just have a couple drums fills and some heavy guitar parts sprinkled in among frilly pop arrangements, but solid rock and roll. I’ve always said that it probably can be done, but I couldn’t have given you an example. That was before I listened to Deer Park Avenue though; back before I heard their latest EP which can best be described as a sort of catchy rock built around strong, singable choruses, and smooth vocals.

Lyrically, this could be seen as more of a pop-rock album without all of the teenage angst themes. The opener, “Hey Maria”, is essentially a story of that friend who’s dating a skeezy guy, and everyone seems to see it but them. It flows well into “Darkness Hides Me”, which reminds me a little bit of older material from the Veronicas, simply because of the percussion and soaring chorus. “Millionaire” rocks the early 2000’s sound of full poppy chords, and sets up the country tinged “Waiting For You” by switching up the styles just enough to keep from alienating this standout track and its hard hitting drums. >>>Read the full review.

Deer Park Avenue – Stop & Go CD Review and Interview
All Indie Magazine
Deer Park Avenue is a rock band that has a sound that fits somewhere in between Green Day, Collective Soul, and Paramore. Unlike a lot of indie bands that tend to sound like everyone else and feel repetitive, Deer Park Avenue’s edgy pop rock sound keeps it light and fun, and they stay away from the category of drab and dull.

City Streets was Deer Park Avenue’s debut EP. It has four tracks including the song, “Over Again” which is their first popular song. The song was featured on Good Day Sacramento and featured on several radio stations and webzine’s across the U.S. and Europe. This song has gained them so much momentum, it set the stage for their second album, “Stop & Go”, which is due to be released to the public at the end of Summer 2011.

My review: Having heard, “Darkness Hides Me” from their new album, “Stop & Go”, I immediately wanted a feature with the band. “Darkness Hides Me” is simply put, an awesome song. It became one of my all time favorite tracks, not only because it fit my personal taste, but also for its structured elements. The entire layout of the song is perfect. The interlude, the hook, chorus, and lyrics together constructed the perfect song. Could this song make it to number 1 on the Billboard charts? Most definitely. >>>Read the full review.

“Over Again” by Deer Park Avenue was chosen as “Video of the Day” on Dec. 21, 2011 because of its professional sound and presentation. The production and songwriting qualities of the recording make this a timeless video, along with the fact that it’s fun to watch this band in action.

The song has original melodic power that makes it one of Sacramento’s most likeable pieces of music even though it’s only two minutes long. The core of the group is made up of sisters Sarah and Stephanie Snyder, who are originally from New York, have traveled the world and wound up living in Sacramento. In 2011 they’ve performed on local TV news shows “Great Day” on KMPH Fox 26 in the Central San Joaquin Valley and “Good Day Sacramento” on CW 31 in Sacramento.

Part of what makes Deer Park Avenue stand out from many other local bands is their emphasis on the actual song instead of just doing a commercial for the group. Something many Sacramento bands usually miss the boat on is producing a single that sounds catchy and makes you want to hear more, but this group has mastered that art. In their bio they say they grew up singing Beatles songs, which is a common claim among artists who operate on a wide terrain of creativity. What makes Deer Park Avenue unique is they have a similar ethic that the Beatles championed, which is the idea that every song matters and that every song has its own unique identity, as opposed to music that sounds copied from another artist. >>>Read the full review.

Interesting Fact: This is a sister duo, who lived in New York, Switzerland, California & France and seem to never stop running/moving. Maybe their live shows get too rowdy and people get hurt? Power Popaholic
A pair of Californian sisters (Sarah and Stephanie Snyder) named the band for a street they lived on during childhood in Long Island, NY. The duo performs a combination of melodic rock and pop (fans of Jana Perri take note) — the harder rock stuff starts off first with “Hey Maria” full of driving guitar chords and a strong chorus.

More subtle is the mid tempo “Darkness Hides Me” as it slowly builds, getting louder as the mood and lyric become more defiant. “Millionaire” is another slow builder but with a strong drum section, a bit like an 80′s arena power ballad with shouts of “Hey! Hey!” in the chorus background and “Over Again” recalls the heavy pop guitars of Tonic or The Goo Goo Dolls with sweet female vocals. >>>Read the full review.

There’s a nice yin-yang kind of contrast going between the singer’s voice and the sound of the music. There’s a little bit of grittiness…it’s not overly polished as far as the music goes, but yet her voice is very smooth, and very clean. You wouldn’t normally put those two together…in this case, I like the contrast. >>>Watch the video.

Music Review – ‘City Streets’ by Deer Park Avenue
The Word Zombie
Deer Park Avenue was created by Sarah and Stephanie Snyder. The two sisters have been playing music together since their cousin, Gregg Bissonette, taught them “Eight Days A Week”. (If you are a rock fan like me and Greg’s name rings a bell – you will recall him fondly from his drum work on David Lee Roth’s “Eat’em and Smile” and “Skyscraper”.) Having lived in California, New York, and France, the sisters currently call Switzerland home. It was there they went from performing covers with their band The Bandits to writing and producing their first E.P. as Deer Park Avenue– “City Streets”.

[Over Again] starts out with a pulsing guitar line, deliciously fat and warm in it’s sound. As it builds through the first verse to the chorus, you’re pulled along at a deceptively breakneck pace. I found myself thinking of Murray Attaway’s “In Thrall” album while listening for some reason. (I can’t put my finger on exactly what elicited the response, but it is, nonetheless, a compliment.) It’s a beautifully constructed song – lush and inviting – but also flavored with a healthy pinch of punk attitude as it’s base. Think Sixpence None the Richer meets Green Day – in some strange and wonderful universe. >>>Read the full review.
